Cynthia and I are doing a family therapy session in a small office. As the group gathers, we move to a larger adjacent room. An old woman, seemingly lost wanders into the room. I am gentle with her and help her leave the room when someone in the group says that she is somebody’s grandmother. That’s followed by two young men who turn out to be someone’s cousins. The group than shifts to an outside area with now a hundred people. I have to make some drastic adjustment to accommodate the large number. There is the risk of the group falling apart, but we seem to hold it together tentatively. I tell a group a story and ask what behavior caused problems. By now the group is starting to disband. I interview some members individually. I ask a gay man if he has any personal examples of poor impulse control, and he gives a long story from his youth. Then, suddenly the entire group is applauding. Even Jeff McBride, the magician who is in a booth is clapping. I don’t know whether they are applauding the group’s performance or are distracted by something else.
